Foreword
The
Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) lays down industry-specific
Minimal N ational Standards (MINAS) for regulating the concentration
and quantum of pollutants. Based on techno-economic considerations,
MINAS is prescribed with the stipulation that the State Pollution
Control Boards may make them stringent, if so required, depending
on the local conditions.
To facilitate the formulation ofMINAS, the Central Board undertakes
in-depth studies on specific types of industry and these are brought
out in the "Comprehensive Industry Document Series (COINDS)". This
document is one in this series of publication which inter-alia deals
with the issues relating to techniques for prevention and control
of pollution.
A team of my
colleagues carried out the field study for collection and collation
of basic data for prevention of this document. The strach and
