Comprehensive Industry Document for Large Pulp & Paper Industry

                                                Foreword
The documents under the title Comprehensive Industry Document Series (COINDS) brought out by the Central Pollution Control Board, are designed to cover the status of various categories of industries in the country in respect of number of units, their locations, capacities, type of product, wastewater generation and its characteristics and unit processes for treatment and control of discharge and emissions of pollutants. The effluent and emission standards evolution also forms a part of these documents. The present document on large pulp and paper mills with chemical recovery system is one in the series.

The concept of best practicable technology currently available and general environmental acceptability has been used to evolve the standards. This has been coupled with cost calculations expressed as total annual burden due to pollution abatement and control as a percentage of total annual turnover

Indepth studies of the units reported in the document were conducted jointly by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Nag pur and the Central Pollution Control Board. The report was also prepared jointly by the two organisations. Help and assistance extended by the State Pollution Control Boards and the paper mills during the studies are gratefully acknowledged. .
