Minimal National Standards for Tanneries

                                               Foreword
The Minimal National Standards (MINAS) specific for various categories of industries are being evolyed after looking into the techno-economic feasibility of the treatment systems. The MINAS are independent of the characteristics of the recipient syst~m. The Central and State Pollution Control Boards have come to an agreement that under no circumstances MINAS would be relaxed, but can be made stringent depending upon the requirement of the recipient system. In the present document MINAS is developed for tanneries. The document is based upon the 'Comprehensive Document on Pollution Control in Tanneries' prepared by Central Leather Research Institute, Madras for the

Central Pollution Control Board. Chromium recovery and recycle, soakwater se~ga- tion, clean technologies for minimum pollutant generation, concept of common effluent treatment schemes for cluster of tanneries, alternatives for toxic pento-chlorophenol are discussed in the report besides the treatment technologies to achieve the standards.

Shri Sandeep Shrivastava, Assistant Environmental Engineer of the Central Board prepared this MINAS document in consultation with Dr. B. Sengupta, Senior Scientist. Dr. K.R. Ranganathan, Member Secretary, Central Board has provided the necessary suggestion~ and edited the report.

I hope this document will be valuable for the industry, State Pollution Control Boards and all those who are concerned with environment quality.
