Revised Minimal National Standards (Pesticide Specific)
Pesticide Manufacturing And Formulation Industry

                                                Foreword
A large number of technical grade pesticides are manufactured in India. Many of these harmful pesticides and their breakdown products flow out in the wastewater discharged by pesticide manufacturing and formulation industries. Control of these toxic compounds is essential to protect aquatic life and to prevent their entry into the food chain.

The Central Board had earlier prescribed general standards (COINDS/15/85-86) for discharge of pesticides (including intermediates and metabolites) in the wastewater from pesticide manufactur- ing and formulation units. However, it
was considered that the standards should be reviewed and pesticide-specific standards be evolved as the degree of toxicity varies from one pesticide to the other. In the present document, standards for specific pesticides are developed on the basis of available data on their toxicity to the most sensitive species.

The present report deals with 20 major pesticides manufactured in the country. Other pesticides will be covered in due course.

It is hoped that the report will be useful to industries, regulatory agencies and all other interested in the control of pollution from pesticide industries.
