In the year 1977. the Central Board for the Prevention & Control of Water Pollution decided to ~ series of Comprehensive Industry Documents for various major Industries in the country to I necessary information on the manufacturing processes pollution load. the various stre; wastewaters and solid wastes. measures to decrease the pollution load by combining processes. provide Minimal National Standards which could be achieved by the Industry c directory of the industries and any other relevant information so that the regulatory agencie: take proper measures for the prevention and control of environmental pollution.

The Comprehensive Industry Document on Fermentation Industries (Breweries. Distilleri Malteriesj is one such of a series that the Central Board for the Prevention and Cor)trol of Pollution hastaken up.lt is published forwide circulation as Comprehensive Industry Document (COINDS).


The objective of this Comprehensive Industry Document apart from giving an overall view industry. is to develop Minimal National Standards (MINAS) for the industry taking into consid the technical feasibility on treatment schemes and the annual cost burden that the industry Cc for the treatment. The evolution of MINAS for each specific industry became imperative becau~ of the industries and fermentation industry in particular expressed their helplessness in impro\i quality of their wastes to a standard which is techno-economically beyond their means.

The Comprehensive Document has been prepared by Industrial Consulting Bureau Limited Delhi under the supervision of an Industry Committee comprising of experts from In Environmental Engineers and representatives of various concerned Government Departme distilleries and also representation from All India Distillers' Association appointed by the Chc Central Board.
