Environmental  Study  During  Kumbh-2001 At Prayag (Allahabad)

                                                Foreword

Mass bathing causes deterioration of water quality at various stretches of rivers. The Kumbh at Prayag is very significant among all the Kumbh. CPCB conducted c: intensive monitoring of mass bathing on several auspicious occasions, when lakhs of people gathered and took dip in rivers. The present study deals with the environmental effects of Kumbh-2001 at Prayag (Allahabad).

Due to significance of mass bathing at Allahabad during Kumbh Mela, the collaborative studies have been undertaken by the Pollution Control Research Institute, BHEL, Hardwar and the Central Pollution Control Board to ascertain the impact of mass bathing  on  river water quality


during Kumbh Mela at Allahabad. The study during Maha Kumbh-2001 at Prayag would help in making environmental management plan during Kumbh festivals in future.

The assistance and support provided by officials of District Administration, Allahabad; Kumbh Mela Administration; Director, Bioved Research Society during the course of the study is gratefully acknowledged. We believe, the study will be useful to District Administration and concerned agencies for formulating Environmental Management Plan for maintaining healthy environment and proper hygiene to bathers during future Kumbh Melas.
