Automatic Water Quality Monitoring of River Ganga - 1992-95

                                                Foreword
Pennar is one of the major river basins in Southern India. The 564km long Pennar originates in the hills of Km-nataka and Andhl-a Pradesh and p(lSSeS through these states and reaches the Bay of Bengal at Vutukur estuarine region. The Pennar Basin includes some areas of Tumkur and Kolar districts in Karnataka; and Nellore, Cuddapah, and Anantllpur districts in Andhra Pradesh

The two districts in Kllrnat.'lkcc'l and three in Andhra Pradesh falling in the course of Pennar have shown considerable incre(lSt: in industrial growth. Though the major parts of these districts are predominantly agricultural, some parts have recorded industrial development in the l(lSt few years. Still the industrial pollution in the rivt:r is not significant.

The distribution and the kind of industries in the Pennar region are not uniform and different art:a..1; have seen the growth of different industries. High water consuming and large pollutlmt contributing indu.l;tries such as textile and paper need pm1icuIar attention with respect to water use and maintt:nance of water quality in the river system. Rapid growth of popj.llation and industries in the Pennar basin require careful planning and management of water resources in the immediate future.

The study reported herein was underulken to (l Sess the pollution potential in river b(lSin and to identity the nature and extent of pollution and its main sQurces both point and non- point. The St.'lte Pollution Control Boards of Kllrnataka, and Andhrn PI(ldesh collected the dry and , wet study data of Pennar Basin. The data were rt:viewed, compiled, edited and presented in the J! form of .C:omprehensive ~iver Basi,n re,port b~ Centre for Envir<.~nmental Studies, Anna University t Chennm m accordance with the guldelmes of the Central Pollution Control Board. j I Shri R.M. Bhardwaj, Scientist 'C' coordinated with the Stlte Pollution Control Boards in L planning, collection of data and in bringing out this document, under the overnll supervision of Dr.R.C. Trivedi, Senior Scientist.

The co-operntion received firm State Pollution Control Boards of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in this important assignment is grntetully acknowledged.
