Basin Sub Basin Inventory of Water Pollution - Cauvery Basin Report

                                               Foreword
The Cauvery River is one of the major ilnterstate rivers of the country flowing eastward through the States of Karnat~a and Tamilnadu, and draining into the Bay of Bengal. In terms of catchment area, it is the eighth largest' among the fourteen major river basins in our c.ountry

The river and its tributaries pass through important urban centres of Banglore, Mysore and mandya in Karnataka; and mettur, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruchirapalli and Kumbakonam in Tamilnadu. Water abstraction and other activities in these urban centres have affected the water quality of river Cauvery from Hoggenkal to Grand Anicut; and in the Hebballa, Vrishabhavati, . Bhavani, Noyyal and Amravathi tributaries

GThe study reported herein was undertaken wi th the obj ecti ve of formulating an action plan to restore and maintain the water quality at such

levels as are needed to. sustain the designated best use of the different stretches of the river. The gt.ate Pollution Control Boards of Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Kerala collected the- data of the basin. The data were reviewed, compiled, edited and presented inthe form of Comprehensive River Basin report by Prof. A.S. Murty, Consultant, in accordance with the guidelines 0£ Central Pollution Control Board .
