Sub Basin Inventory of Water Pollution - Tapi Basin |
| Foreword
The Tapi is one
of the major rivers flowing westward through the States of Madhya )radesh, Maharashtra
and Gujarat, and draining into the Gulf of Khambat of Arabian sea. In erms of
catchment area, it is the ninth largest among the fourteen major river basins
in our country.
The Tapi Basin is predominantly an agricultural region
in Madhya Pradesh and industries are centered in East Nimar (Khandwa) district.
The middle and lower reaches of the Tapi Basin n Jalgaon (Maharashtra) and Surat
(Gujarat) are fairly industrialised. There are several large and medium scale
industrial units besides large number of small scale units.
The important
urban centres in the basin are Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh; Akola, 3husawal, Jalgaon,
Malegaon and Dhule in Maharashtra; and Surat in Gujarat. |
|
The urban
and industrial regions are the causes of considerable pressure on water 3.bstraction
and are the major contributors of pollution loads to the river. The stream flows
during summer months, being very little or non-existant further complicates the
situation resulting in deterioration of water quality in the river from Dedtalai
to confluence of River Purna; confluence of River Bori to River Gomai; Ukai dam
to Surat; and from Surat to Hazira. The water quality is deteriorated in the tributary
river Panjhra at downstream of Dhule; River Gomai before con- fluence with Tapi;
River Purna after confluence with River Murna; and River Vaghur downstream of
Jalgaon.
The study reported herein was undertaken with the objective of
formulating an action plan to restore and maintain the river water quality at
such levels as are needed to sustain the desig- nated best use of the different
stretches of the river. The State Pollution Control Boards of Mad- hya Pradesh,
Maharashtra and Gujarat collected the basic data for the respective parts of the
basin. The reports were reviewed, compiled, edited and presented in the form of
f Comprhenen- sive River Basin report by Shri B. Datta, Consultant, according
to the guidelines of the Central Board. Shri T. Venugopal, Dr. R.C. Trivedi,
Dr. (Mrs.) K.K. Saxena and Shri R.M. Bhardwaj coor- dinated with the State Pollution
Control Boards in planning, collection of data and finally bringing out this document.
The Central Board acknowledges the cooperation received from the State
Pollution con- trol Boards of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
I
hope, the documen1will be useful to all concerned with the quality of river waters.
