Basin Sub-Basin Inventory of Water Pollution - Mahanadi Basin

                                               Foreword

The Mahanadi Basin is one of the developing regions of the central and peninsular India in agriculture and industry. There are 40 large and 82 medium industrial units operating in the basin. The important industrial regions in the basin are Bhilai, Durg, Raipur , Rajnandgaon, Korba, Urla and Bilaspur in Madhya Pradesh; and Paradeep, Nayagarh, Badama, Baragarh, Brajrajnagar, Rampur and Hirakud in Orissa. The river encompassess the important urban centres of Raipur, Bhilainagar, Bilaspur, Durg, Cut tack, Bhubaneswar , Sambalpur and Puri. These urban and industrial centres are intensively utilising the water resources; and, as a consequence there is deterioration in the water quality in river Mahanadi from Sambhalpur to Sonepur, and in the reach of Cut tack township. The water quality is deteriorated in the Seonath, Arpa and Ib tributaries by the wastewater generated from urban centres as well as paper mill effluents subsequently
The study reported herein was undertaken with the objective of formulating an action plan to restore and maintain the river water quality at such levels as are needed to sustain the designated best use of the different stretches of the river. The State pollution Control Boards of Madhya Pradesh and Orissa collected the basic data for the respective parts of the basin. The reports were reviewed, compiled, edited and presented in the form of Comprehensive River Basin report by the State Prevention and Control of pollution Board, Orissa according to the guidelines of the central Board.
