Basin Sub -Basin Krishna Basin Report

                                              Foreword
Krishna is one of the important rivers of India. It is an interstate river passing through Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh before discharging into the Bay of Bengal. In terms of catchment area, it is the fourth among the fourteen major river basins.

Krishna basin is one of the fast developing regions of the peninsular India in agriculture, industry, and tourism. There are 500 important industrial units operating in the basin. It also encompasses Hyderabad the fifth largest metropolitan city of India and also important towns like Pune, Satara, Sholapur, Kolhapur, Bijapur, Belgaum, Raichur, Kurnool & Vijayawada and drains numerous fast growing urban-industrial settlements. There is intensive utilization of the available water resources and as a consequence there is deterioration in the river water quality.

The study reported herein was undertaken with an objective of formulating an action plan , to restore and maintain the river water quality at such levels as are needed to sustain the designated best uses of the d ifferent stretches of the river

The basic methodology adopted in the study is the same as for other similar studies. The State Pollution Control Boards collected the basic data and compiled the draft report for the respectiv'e parts of the basin. The reports were reviewed and edited and presented in present form by Dr. G.D. Agrawal a well known expert in the field.

An Action Plan to improve water quality of the river has been prepared and is under consideration of the Government of India. I believe that the present document would be found useful by all those interested and concerned with quality of our river waters.
