| Effect
of mass Bathing on Water Quality of Brahma Sarovar (Kuruksheshetra) During Soalr
Eclipse |
| Foreword
As there is a strong
possibility of the spread of water borne diseases during or as a result of such
events of mass bathing, Central Board has conducted a series of studies on river
Ganga at various places during Kumbh Melas with a view to ascertain the degree
of impairment of water quality. The present study was conducted at Kurukshetra
'in Haryana bathing associated with the event of solar eclipse.
The important
urban centres in the catchment of Godavari are Nasik, Aurangabad, Nag pur, Watdha,
Nanded and Chandrapur in Maharashtra~ Nizamabad, MancheriaI, Ramagundam, Bhadrachalam
and Rajahundry in Andhra Pradesh; and Seoni and Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh.
These
urban centres are inten~ively utilising the water resources; and as a consequence
there is deterioration in the water quality in the river Godavari from Nasik to
Nanded in Maharashtra; at Baser and Burgampad in Andhra Pradesh. |
|
The water
quality is deteriorated in the tributary Manjira from Lat~r in Karnataka to Maharashtra
State border; tributary Wardha's confluence with river Panganga to downstream
of Sirpur in Maharashtra; Manjira at Sangareddy; and Peddavagu downstream of Sirpur
paper Mills in Andhra pradesh; and Indravati at Bodhghat in Madhya Pradesh.
The
study reported herein/ was undertaken with the objective of formulating action
plan to restore and maintain the river water quality at such level as is needed
to sustain the designated-best-use of the different stretches of the river. The
State Pollution Control Boards of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pra~esh
and Kamataka collected the basic data in their respective parts of the basin.
The reports were reviewed, compiled, edited and presented in the form of a Comprehensive
River Basin report by Shrt Y.S.Murty, Consultant in accordance with the guidelines
of the Central Board.
Shri T. Venugopal, Dr. R.C.Trivedi, ,Dr.(Mrs.) K.K.
Saxena, Shri V. Rajan and Shri R.M. Bhardwaj coordinated with the State Pollution
Control Boards in planning, collection of data and finally in bringing out the
document in the published form. .
The Central Board acknowledges the cooperation
received from the State Pollution Control Boards of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh,
Madhya Pradesh and Karanataka.
I hope, the present document will be useful
to all concerned with the quality of river waters. |
